Oil and gas operator currently have an opening for a Computer Scientist to join their team for a contract role up until the end of November 2018 based here in Aberdeen.

MAIN ACTIVITIES:

  • Develop technical tools to meet set targets in time, quality and performance

  • Communicate effectively with colleagues & clients

  • Ensure internal technology transfer through training and assistance to users, written reports or internal presentations.

  • In conjunction with GRC staff, define and delineate GRC programming requirements and design (or develop) appropriate solutions so that software programmes available will satisfy actual requirements.

  • Keep abreast of relevant developments in IT in order to be able to advise GRC management regarding new technologies and their potential applications at the GRC.

  • Contribute actively to the efficiency management of GRC IT needs.

  • Lead role in code development and maintenance of projects from scratch, building on GRC applications and integrating existing tools; achieved through strong collaboration with geoscientists and by demonstrating strong knowledge of available tools/methods and procedures (Sismage, T-StoRM, gOcad, Totem, HPC)

  • Responsible for different GRC Data Management tasks: Sismage/ T-StoRM projects, student’s directories, Linux file system

  • Responsible for different GRC system administration tasks: Linux environment, Sismage/ T-StoRM environments, software development environment, software license administration ... in close relation.

  • Implement new research ideas generated by GRC scientists (staff, student, VIE)

  • Improve existing codes and perform bug fixing as appropriate.

  • Define and delineate GRC system requirements; propose or develop appropriate solutions and implement agreed modifications as directed, within timescales agreed and to an acceptable standard

  • In conjunction with GRC scientists integrate existing tools in order to fill gaps in existing technology.

  • Develop and maintain close contacts with staff in IS, HQ and elsewhere, as necessary for the execution of different projects

  • Train/ coach/ mentor team colleagues/ interns/ VIEs in IT environment, software development and best practices

  • Keep up to date and inform team colleagues of new IT technology. Make technical presentations to internal staff, partners or at conference as appropriate

  • Take initiative in the development of solutions within existing standards & procedures

  • Plan and priorities own workload to ensure that activities are carried out in a planned and effective manner

  • Participate in the exchange of ideas and knowledge within a multi-disciplinary research environment (geology, geophysics, reservoir engineering)

  • Participate in the budget management and cost efficiency for GRC IT needs.

    SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS:

  • Outstanding demonstrable skills and knowledge in geoscience and proven expertise in the field of scientific and numerical programming and visualization e.g. Fortran90, C/C++, Java, Matlab, and Python/Julia

  • Demonstrated knowledge and proven skills in: advanced numerical methods and optimization, and parallel computing on internal HPC platform with Unix/Linux operating systems

  • Communication skills and adaptability to work in co-operation with geologists, geophysicists and reservoir engineers

  • Willingness to learn about geosciences disciplines and to work with geoscientists
